Vegetarian In Jakarta, Indonesia

When I visited Plaza Semanggi, I found a vegetarian restaurant named Loving Hut. It is located at 3A floor. The restaurant is very clean and cozy with TV set and sofa. As I sat down, the waitress came and brought the menu. Well, it was the first time for me to read a big and luxurious printed menu. After reading for a moment, I said to her that I would like to have Seven Seas Delight with Rice to dine and Energized Popeye Juice to drink. I also asked her to leave the menu on my table. After she walked away, I tried to take a photo of it and you can see it here.

After waiting for a moment she brought the dishes and juice. Then she pleased me to eat. After she left me, once again I took a photo of the dishes.

My Internet Connection, Telkomspeedy

Telkomspeedy is an internet connection service using Asymetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) technology provided by Telkom Indonesia. The ADSL technology ables automatically connect ADSL modem to server using Telkom telephone line. An ADSL modem provided with a splitter which enables costumer to make or receive phone call when Internet connection is active.

I have been using Telkomspeedy since December, 2007. I remember,  it was a slow ADSL connection. Sometimes, it made me hungry and angry when I used it to browse.  Usually  it was only 7 KB/sec to download using Mozilla Firefox at home. When I visited the promo at Telkom Building located at Jalan Teuku Umar, Denpasar, the browser showed only 3 to 4 KB/sec…. Well, It was a hard time for the salesman to sell Telkomspeedy since it was too slowwwwww. But I agreed to subscribe because Telkom is an Indonesian State-Owned Company.

One day in August 2008, a staff of Telkomspeedy called me and she asked me about Telkomspeedy service and said on behalf of PT Telkom she thanked me to use Telkomspeedy connection. I taught, it just a lip service since I usually called Telkomspeedy costumer care when the connection down. But I felt something different when I downloaded an open source flight simulator from FlightGear. The Telkomspeedy is faster than before…. The browser shows 42.6 KB/sec at 8.00 am using Prolink H9200J ADSL modem. Never since I described the connection I have got this speed. Yes, it is true and I never call 147 (the phone number to report or complaint about Telkomspeedy where I never spoke softly) again.

Telkomspeedy 42.6 KB/sec

Telkomspeedy is downloading at 42.6 KB/sec

Now I am enjoy watching video from internet with Telkomspeedy. Thanks for the service.

Kelurahan Dauh Puri Celebrate The Indonesia Independence Day

Lot of work to do in this month. The village or Kelurahan Dauh Puri
of Denpasar Bali celebrate the 63th anniverary of Indonesia
Independence Day on August 18, 2008 with Torch Festival and Bamboo Climbing
events .

The Torch Festival started at 19.00 pm on August 16. During the event, the
people walked around the Kelurahan area and carried a bamboo torch start from
Buru Street to Diponegoro Street, Hasanudin Street, Mayjen Sutoyo Street, PB.
Sudirman Street, Yos Sudarso Street, Diponegoro Street, Nusakambangan Street
and finish at Kelurahan Office. At the end of the festival, a lot of
door prizes given by bussinessmen and companies in Dauh Puri were drawn. The
poeple were very happy when they got some umbrellas, bags, shoes, DVD Player,
Television Set and many other things and left the Kelurahan Office at
about 10.00 pm.

After supper, we continued our work to to prepare the Bamboo Climbing event.
Two bamboo poles were brought from Kelurahan Office to Tragia Area. The
bamboos were carried by Pecalang Trijaga Mandala. At Tragia Area we started to
dig a hole for bamboo position and tied the gift on bamboo. Each bamboo has 24
black plastic bags of gift. It was a hard work for Pecalang Trijaga Mandala to
dig some holes at Tragia Area. We found no problem at the first dig and the
bamboo pole was succesfully erected. But not for the second one. We failed to
dig a hole for the second bamboo due to stonelike building material laid under
the soil. It could be from the ex building of a jail before the Tragia Shopping
Centre was built. We moved to another position and start to dig but failed
again……. At the fifth position we succesfully dig a hole for the second
bamboo. Thanks to Pecalang Trijaga Mandala for their help.
On August 17, at 10.00 pm the people came to Bamboo Climbing event. There
were some groups of youth prepared to climb the bamboos. It was not easy to do
since both bamboss has been with filled with oil! The oily bamboo surface often
caused the climbers sliding down and made the event full of joy. After some
trials the climbers are able to reach the top of bamboo pole and to drop down the
gifts….

Happy Anniversary of Indonesia Independence Day.

About AXIOO PICO Notebook

On August 18, 2008, I bought AXIOO PICO notebook at RIMO Mall accompanied with my friend, Edi Budiasa. RIMO Mall is located at Jalan Diponegoro, Denpasar City, Bali. RIMO is biggest computer shopping mall in Bali. Actually I would like to buy an Asus EEE PC 900, but we didn’t find it. After looking at some booth’s displays, we found a nice looking AXIOO PICO notebook at Cipta Piranti Utama.

At first sight, I felt in love with this notebook. It has white color and 10 inch WSVGA LCD bundled with Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP 2. It is also equipped with Intel Atom 1.6 GHz CPU, 1 GB SODIMM RAM, three USB connectors, Speaker and Mic connector, WIFI, Web cam, card reader, LAN RJ-45 connector, stereo speaker and VGA connector. There is no optical drive in this notebook, so we need an external DVD drive to install the softwares.

We asked the sales girl about the price. She said,” Five million six hundred thousand Rupiahs.” I agree with the price but she said there is no technician today due to anniversary of Indonesia Independence Day. I said, “OK, we can install the software here but you have to lend us an external DVD drive”. She cannot help because there is no external DVD drive at Cipta Piranti Utama. I read at PC Media Magazine that Cipta Piranti Utama is a main dealer of AXIOO in Denpasar. How could there is no External DVD Drive at Cipta Piranti Utama? The salesgirl and the manager said that they can not lend us the drive. I canceled the transaction and looked for another choice.

At first floor, we found AXIOO PICO notebook at Tri Star. We asked him about the external DVD Drive and he said “we can lend you the drive and also the technician.” Well, I think no problem to install the software. We asked the price, and the salesman said, “Five million eight hundred thousand Rupiahs”. I asked “What about 5.6 ? ”. He said “OK”. Then I checked the notebook and we started to install the software.

I would like to install the Ubuntu 8.04 Operating System and planned to use it with Microsoft XP Home Edition in this notebook (dual boot). After exploring the notebook, we found that only one partition in 160 GB hard disk for system (drive C). We tried to make another partition using Partition Magic Software in Windows XP, but it failed to make another partition. We tried another way by booting it via external DVD drive and use Partition Magic in DOS, but still didn’t work. Then I decided to use Windows XP only and continued to install some free ware but excellent softwares such as Open Office, GIMP, Mozilla Firefox, Foxit Reader, FLV Player, Winamp, Google Earth, IZArc and Amaya. All of the software are working properly, except the Ubuntu Operating System. Is it possible to install Ubuntu OS in this notebook? Somebody help me, please?

DS1621 Digital Thermometer and Thermostat

Ahmad Zaki Yamani is a student of Politeknik Negeri Bali (PNB). He came to my house and asked me about how to use DS1621, a temperature sensor chip made by Dallas Semiconductor. He bought it in Surabaya City. Well, I have never been using it before, and I said, “I don’t know how to use it”. He told me that he brought the data sheet of the chip. I read it carefully. It seems that he got it from www.maxim-ic.com. For me, it is difficult to understand how does the chip work to convert the temperature to the logic form. But the data sheet describes clearly about data communication between this chip and its controller using 2-wire serial bus. The data sheet informs about thermostat feature with thermal output alarm (Tout) pin. This output is active when the temperature exceeds a user-defined temperature (TH). It sounds interesting for me and I agree to help him to use the chip as digital thermostat with PIC 16F877 micro controller.

After a few days of experiments, we found the right way to make it work as a digital thermostat. Here are the algorithm :

1. Set the High Temperature (TH) Register.

2. Set the Low Temperature (TL) Register.

3. Set the Configuration Register with 03 Hex (Active High Polarity and 1-SHOT mode).

4. Start temperature conversion by sending START CONVERT command .

5. Give it a delay about 1 second.

6. Check bit 6 of Configuration Register. If it is high, the temperature exceeds high temperature limit.

7. Check bit 5 of Configuration Register. If it is high, the temperature belows low temperature limit.

7. Give it a delay about 1 second.

8. Stop temperature conversion by sending STOP CONVERT command.

9. Apply a delay as needed and loop back to step 3.

By checking bit 6 and 5 of Configuration Register, one able to know when the temperature exceeds or belows temperature limit. Dallas Semiconductor writes that, “Tout becomes active when temperature meets  or exceeds the value stored in TH register and will stay active until the  temperature falls below the temperature stored in the  TL register.” For us, Tout doesn’t work as described by the producer.  We probe Tout pin using logic probe. It gives low logic when the temperature belows TL register but it doesn’t give high logic when the temperature exceeds TH register. It gives only 0.8 volt output. When we decrease the temperature belows TL register, Tout still doesn’t give low logic.

Does anybody know how to use Tout pin of DS1621? I am waiting for your comment or advise. Thank’s.

Kite Flying in Sanur Beach

On June 08, 2008, Rama and Krisna bought a new kite at Ketut Sumitha’s shop. The shop is located at Nusakambangan Street, in front of Erlangga Art Shop, Denpasar, Bali. They chose Be-bean type kite (a “fish”-form traditional kite). The kite was made from plastic with bamboo stick frame and it cost Rp 7,000. It was not a big one, but they didn’t know where to fly it. I told them to fly it in Sanur Beach since the wind was strong enough to fly the kite. They agreed to go to the beach and asked me to accompany them.

Sanur Beach has some entry points. We decided to enter the beach via Pantai Karang Street. Pantai Karang (Karang Beach) is our favorite place to visit in Sanur Beach. The Honorary Consulate of Hungary is also located in this street. We love this beach since it has a sea wave barrier, make it safe for us to swim. There is also a changing room with shower here.

Rama and I were swimming for a while at the beach while Krisna flews the kite alone. Krisna made a pivot string for kite and then he flew it easily since the wind was strong and its exact pivot point. The kite moved to left and right with balance. We loved to see our kite flying.

Well, I think Sanur Beach is also a good place for kite flying and Ketut Sumitha is a good kite maker.

The “Dewa Yadnya” Set – Collection Of Bali Museum

The term Dewa Yadnya means the religious ceremony dedicated to God in all of His manifestation which is carried out in a temple or other holy place. The Dewa Yadnya is one Panca Mahayadnya (Five Great Yadnya) as describes in Taittriya Aranyaka 2.10. The Dewa Yadnya in Bali includes the ceremonies such as Memungkah or Ngenteg Linggih, a ceremony performed when using a building for the first time or renovating a temple. Odalan, a ceremony performed every 210 days. Betara Turun Kabeh, a ceremony conducted every one year of Saka Calender. Panca Wali Krama , the ceremony dedicated to God every five years of Saka Calender. Eka Dasa Rudra, every 100 years of Saka Calender.

The Dewa Yadnya set – collection of Bali Museum consists of a number of Pratima (certain God statuettes), Pralingga (mythological of God’s vehicle), Janggawari (a construction used to lay down the Pratima in the purification procession ceremony towards the sea or water resources), and a few of pots to keep the Tirtha (Holy Water).

Dewa Yadnya Set

I will tell you about Pratima and Pralingga collected by Bali Museum. Some items of Pratima are: Rambut Sedana, Dewi Saraswati ( Goddess Saraswati ), and also Siwa and Durga Mounted On A Bull.

Rambut Sedana is a Pratima to worship the God of Wealth. It is assembled by chinese kepeng coins. Rambut Sedana is beloved by merchants.

The Pratima of Rambut Sedana

Dewi Saraswati is the Goddess of knowledge, music and art. The Pratima of Dewi Saraswati is worshiped to bless the holy scriptures and literatures being held by Hindu family. The adoration is also to protect and avoid the devotees from laziness and unawareness.

Pratima of Dewi Saraswati

Siwa and Durga Mounted on A Bull is another Pratima displayed at Bali Museum. In Hinduism, Siwa is one of the Trimurti ( the three primary aspects of divine ). According to the Trimurti system, the creator is Brahma, the maintainer or preserver is Wisnu, and the destroyer or transformer is Siwa. Meanwhile Durga is demon-fighting of Siwa’s wife, Goddess Parwati, as described in Markandeya Purana.

Siwa and Durga Mounted On A Bull

Pralingga Macan is the God’s vehicle in Tiger form. Tiger is the vehicle of Goddess Durga. According to Markandeya Purana, the form of Durga was created as a warrior goddess to fight a demon called Mahishasura. The Goddess Durga rode Her tiger and killed Mahishasura with Her trident.

Vegetarian in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia

On May 17, 2008 I went to Veggie Corner with Wayan Subakti. Veggie Corner is vegetarian restaurant in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia. It is located at Jalan Imam Bonjol No. 133 Denpasar. Although it has not a large dining room, the restaurant serves domestic and international cuisine. At this time Wayan liked to have Nasi Goreng Seafood ( fried rice with “seafood” ) while I asked for Nasi Langgi ( rice with spicy Langgi, fried potatoes and sliced fried tempe ).

Nasi Langgi

At Veggie Corner Restaurant you can ask for vegetarian menu such as : Sate Oriental with peanut sauce, Grilled Soya, Fried Sealike Soya, Grilled Gluten, Fried Lakely Soya. The prices are about Rp 10000 to Rp 12500. It sounds reasonable for the price.

The other vegetarian restaurant in Denpasar is Veggie House. It is located at Pertokoan Sudirman Agung B12A Jalan Sudirman Denpasar. The restaurant is clean and comfort with air conditioner and television set showing Supreme Master TV Program.

Veggie House serves vegetarian pizza and burger such as: vegetable pizza, veggie soya meat pizza, veggie white pizza, veggie hamburger and veggie fillet burger. It use no egg mayonaise. I went to this vegetarian restaurant with Ramacandra. He loves to eat Nasi Goreng Omelet while I like to eat Nasi Goreng Oriental. The picture below shows Nasi Goreng Omelet served by Veggie House. The fried rice is covered by the omelet. I guarantee you will be impressed too. The price is Rp 12500.

Nasi Goreng At Veggie House

At Jalan Cok Agung Tresna no. 108 Denpasar, there is a place you can dine. It name is Bodhi Veg Restaurant. This restaurant has different atmosphere with two restaurants I mention before. Bodhi Veg has a tiny but pleasant garden with fountain. I think that it is a right place to dine in.

Garden At Bodhi Veg

Bodhi Veg serves vegetarian menu without egg, garlic, onion nor mushroom. The menu items such as Ikan Bakar (Grilled Vegetarian Fish), Ayam Bakar (Grilled Vegetarian Chicken), Sayur Hijau (Mixed Green Vegetables), Spaghetti, Tempura, Udang Bumbu Pedas (Shrimp with Spicy Seasoning).

If you go to Kuta or Tuban area, there is a vegetarian restaurant near the Ngurah Rai Statue in front of the Pertamina petrol station. De Ra Sa offers menu such as Nasi Bebek BBQ ( Rice with Vegetarian “Duck” BBQ ), Nasi Ayam BBQ ( Rice with Vegetarian “Chicken” BBQ ), Nasi Goreng Seafood ( Fried Rice with Vegetarian “Seafood ), and Seaweed Soup, and other Chinese Vegetarian Cuisine. De Rasa also offers special drink named Momocaca Ice. The price is Rp 7800. I like it very much.

Momocaca Ice

On June 7, 2008 I went to Chai Ken Siang Vegetarian Restaurant with Ramacandra. The restaurant is located in Jalan Teuku Umar Barat No 9X Denpasar, in front of Super Ekonomi Supermarket. Chai Ken Siang Vegetarian Restaurant serves daily special menu, that is: Rawon Vegetarian on Monday, Soto Babad Vegetarian on Tuesday, Pangsit Mie and Bakso on Wednesday, Nasi Campur Khas Bali on Thursday, Soto Ayam Veggie on Friday and Sate Gulai on Saturday. This restaurant is equipped with air conditioner so you won’t get sweat while you dine. At those time, we have had Kolobak and Cap Cay Goreng. It cost Rp, 8500 for Kolobak and Rp 8,000 for Cap Cay Goreng. In my opinion, this restaurant serves delicious Chinese and Indonesian cuisine.

Cap Cay at Chai Ken Siang

Chai Ken Siang Vegetarian Restaurant also serves special beverage named with Teh Susu Mutiara Asli Taiwan (Tea and Milk with Taiwan Pearl). Ramacandra and I like it very much.
